Though the Harvard men's golf team placed fifth at the Ivy League Golf Championships this weekend, the tournament was not without its bright spots for the Crimson. While Pennsylvania won the team championship, Harvard senior co-captain Alex Gonzalez shot the lowest combined score for the tournament.

Gonzalez posted an impressive threeover par 73 on Friday, battling horrible weather the entire day. Continuing his terrific performance, he duplicated his accomplishment with another 73 on Saturday. With his stellar performance, he not only became the medalist for the men's tournament, but garnered a position on the All-Ivy team.

Of his accomplishment, Gonzalez said, "It was a great win to finish off my career with."

This win could not have come at a more appropriate time. Gonzalez--finishing out his college career this year--had not won a tournament in his last six years of competition.

He said, "It feels pretty good. Its my first win in a long time."

After finishing 30th last year at the Ivy League Golf Championships, Gonzalez came out of nowhere to stun the field.

Gonzalez was not alone in his stellar play. Another great Crimson performance was turned in by freshman Matt Dost. He turned in a 79, nine over par in Friday's heavy winds and rainy conditions. When the sun peaked through the clouds on Saturday he scored an amazing 72, two over par, the third best score posted on the day.

"It could have been better," Dost said. "I'm happy with the outcome, however it would have been better if the whole team did well."

Pennsylvania's tournament win is its first Ivy League Men's Golf Championship. They won the tournament, barely beating out Yale for the title. The Yale team shot a combined 601 two strokes behind the 599 that the Penn team posted.

Though Yale came in second, both the Elis and the Quakers have three players on the Men's All-Ivy League team.
