While you spent the past couple weeks catching up with those strange and unusual winter sports as seen in the Winter Olympics, freshman Dora Gyorffy was concentrating on two of the classic Summer Olympic sports--the high jump and the triple jump.
Over the weekend Gyorffy dominated the Heptagonals field in both events and propelled her team into a fifth-place finish.
More impressively, Gyorffy's assault on the Harvard record books continued. Earlier in the season, the freshman leaper had assumed the title of the most dominant female jumper in Harvard history--breaking the Harvard record in both the high jump and triple jump.
This weekend Gyorffy outdid herself in the biggest meet of the season thus far.
In the high jump Gyorffy won with a 1.91-meter explosion. The mark was a Heptagonals, Harvard and personal record.
In the triple jump, Gyorffy soared for an amazing 12.27 meters. To give you a sense of her dominance, Gyorffy's winning jump exceeded that of her closest competitor by nearly two feet.
However, there's always room for improvement.
"I didn't start that great in the triple jump," Gyorffy said. "But I put myself together."
And the high jump?
"I was really nervous before the high jump," Gyorffy said. "I couldn't really warm up because so many people were already warming up."
Well, hopefully, in next weekend's NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., Gyorffy will have plenty of space to warm up and will bring home a national title.
