Reliance on LSAT Problematic

Letters

To the editors:

I cringed when I read Thomas Cotton's "Defining Diversity Down" because of his reliance on the LSAT as a good measure of ability and knowledge. I don't know specifically about the LSAT, but if it is anything like the GRE it is a test written by and for white males, and so does not present, itself, an unbiased measure of ability.

Many people have shown that such tests show great differences among different groups, irrespective of ability. Hopefully schools admit students on more realistic standards than a single test. LAUREN E. HOUGH'99   March 18, 1998
