Rebekah

Remember to Breathe

Beautiful, happy and self-assured pop music is what the artist simply known as Rebekah starts to deliver on the album, Remember to Breathe. The first two tracks of the CD, "Hey Genius" and "Sin So Well," are confident, bold and matter-of-fact indictments of pretense and societal hang-ups concerning intellect and sex. Listening to these songs is a pleasure. The title track, "Remember to Breathe" ranks as the best song on the album. It may stand as one of the best twenty-something anthems of the '90s.

However, as the album hits the mid-way point, the immaturity of Rebekah's craft quickly starts to show. "Keep It a Secret," with its plea from a hanger-on girlfriend to her ex-boyfriend, jars the senses with its awkward lyrics, stiff music and pitiable subject material. Unfortunately, "Keep it a Secret" is only the seventh track on the album. The rest of the album continues with a series of embarrassing failures. It becomes obvious that Rebekah has either not been at her craft for a very long time or has not yet pursued it with enough vigor to supply strong material for a whole album.

It is sad to watch, but Rebekah still shows much promise. Her future albums will probably get much better as she focuses on her work and produces more music. As such, Remember to Breathe deserves a listen just to know what kind of raw talent awaits us in the near future of the pop music forefront.
