LUBBOCK, Texas--Ruth Riley scored all 23 of her points in the second half last night to lead Notre Dame to an 74-59 upset of top-seeded Texas Tech in the second round of the NCAA tournament Midwest Regional.
Riley went 9-for-12 from the field, using her 6-foot-5 frame to convert lob passes and tip-ins into easy baskets over the smaller Lady Raiders (26-5). She missed all but one minute of the first half because of early foul trouble.
The game stayed tight until midway through the second half when the Fighting Irish (22-9) ran off 12 straight points to take a 55-44 lead.
The host Lady Raiders never threatened again.
Sheila McMillen added 13 for the Irish. Alicia Thompson, a first-team All-America forward playing her final game for the Lady Raiders, led Teach with 17.
The Lady Raiders shot just 21-for-63 from the field, including 3-for-17 from three-point range.
It was the Lady Raiders' first home NCAA tournament loss in 10 games. As hosts of next week's regional championship, they could have played two more games in Lubbock.
