Harvard men's soccer captain Tom McLaughlin was drafted Sunday by the New England Revolution in the third round of the Major League Soccer draft.

"I was just ecstatic when I found out," McLaughlin said. "I didn't think it was a possibility going into the year, but as the season progressed Coach [Steve Locker] told me some teams were interested," McLaughlin said.

A Harvard soccer captain has been drafted in each of the two years in which the three-year-old league has conducted a draft. Wil Kohler '97 was drafted by the New York/New Jersey Metrostars a year ago, and decided not to play.

While being drafted is no guarantee of a spot on the team, McLaughlin hopes to be able to practice with the team intermittent with finishing his academic career this semester. One of the advantages of New England, besides the location, is that the team is not frightened away by McLaughlin's desire to complete his degree.

"I'm definitely going to stay in school," he said. "Hopefully we'll be able to work something out.
