Patrick Normoyle was elected president of the Kennedy School Student Government (KSSG) in the KSSG's first popular presidential election, held between Tuesday and Thursday last week.
Normoyle, who is a second-year in the Master of public policy (MPP) program, pledged during his campaign to work toward increasing the aggressiveness of the KSSG Career Services Office and improving computer services.
Five candidates, including last year's KSSG treasurer, F. Jay Olson, ran for the position.
The candidates participated in a live debate on Tuesday night.
"It was a great idea to popularly elect the student body president," Normoyle said last Monday. "I have a problem with the legitimacy of an internal election."
Bryan S. Schiller, a first-year in the MPP program, said Normoyle seemed "extremely energetic and charismatic," noting that Normoyle had a "large following" at the presidential debate.
Maria C. Figueroa, a second-year in the MPP program, agreed.
"He makes a big effort to get to know everybody," she said.
Figueroa said she is pleased with the new, democratic election process since it is more open and competitive.
"It's the way an election should be run at a public policy school," she said.
