The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) named Harvard baseball coach Joseph M. Walsh the Northeast Rigion Division I Coach of the Year. Walsh led the Crimson to a 34-16 record, marking the secondmost wins in the team's 129-year history.
During the year's regular season, the Crimson defeated nationally-ranked teams such as Miami, which ended up finshing third in the nation, and UMass. After winning the Ivy Legue Championship, the Crimson defeated Patriot League Champion Army which led them to the Midwest Regional tournament.
While there, Walsh led his team to upset top-seeded and fourth-ranked UCLA. After defeating fourth-seeded Stetson in the second rond, the Crimson's run ended with losses to Oklahoma State and a rematch with UCLA in the double-elimination tournament.
Walsh graduated from Sffolk College in 1976 with a degree in philosophy. After coaching suffolk's baseball team for 14 years and being named ABCA Northeast Region Division III Coach of the Year in 1995, Walsh was recruited to coach at Harvard. In his two seasons, Walsh has led the Crimson to a 57-33 record.
