Lord Runcie Not Archbishop of Canterbury

TO THE EDITORS

I found Monday's article about Lord Runcie of Cuddesdon's visit to Memorial Church most entertaining, although I must confess it was entirely for the wrong reasons.

Gregory S. Krauss provided a reasonable summary of Lord Runcie's sermon, but in referring to him time and again as "the Archbishop of Canterbury" Mr. Krauss committed a grave error.

Lord Runcie was the 102nd Archbishop. His successor, George Carey, has held the title of 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury for some five years.

The Right Reverend Lord Runcie deserves our respect as a former ecclesiastical grandee, not a current one.

I trust Mr. Krauss will check his facts more assiduously on his next assignment. --Thomas F. Moore '98
