This past Friday night in New York at the annual Millrose Games, Harvard co-captain lan Carswell made Harvard history.
After placing sixth overall in the 3,000 meters, Carswell was not only the first collegian to cross the finish line, beating out defending NCAA Champion Ryan Wilson of Arkansas, but he also recorded a time of 7:57.21.
The spectacular finish topped the Harvard record by 2.71 seconds, one which Carswell himself owned.
That performance automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000 which are to be held in Indianapolis on March 7-8.
"I knew that I was on pace to break the record so it wasn't that much of a surprise," Carswell said. "[The Millrose Games] was all part of my training for the latter part of the season, culminating in March at the NCAA's in Indianapolis."
The national championships are not foreign to Carswell, who was an All-American in the 3,000 in 1995 and also finished seventh in that event at the NCAAs.
