FOOTBALL FANS, START TRAINING

A summary of views, commentary and sometimes comedy.

Harvard's football team is off to a 5-1 start (3-0 in the Ivy League) and as avid sports fans, we can't help but be somewhat surprised. Sure, the alumni were starting to get restless as Coach Tim Murphy posted losing seasons in each of his first three years on the job. And yes, the team has returned its entire starting defense from the 1996 season. But 5-1?

With the dismal 1995 season (2-8, 1-6 Ivy League) still in recent memory, we're still having trouble getting used to the idea of a potentially winning year. How riled up will Harvard students get for the Yale game knowing that it represents something besides a way to salvage an otherwise poor season? How will we be able to become absorbed in the curious antics of the Band when there's actually something worth watching on the field?

Clearly, we have our work cut out for us.
