Salaries at HMC Are out of Control

TO THE EDITORS

I read your recent article on salaries at the Harvard Management Company ("Despite 'Disappointing Year,' Salaries at HMC Skyrocket," News Story, July 19) with disbelief. Greed is alive at HMC.

When, for instance, President Neil L. Rudenstine's campaign for University-wide funding is in need of support, Jonathan S. Jacobson's $6 million-plus compensation package demeans well-intentioned donations of much less, say $1 million. How can a simple money manager believe his purse to be more valuable than an ethic of reasonable compensation? That could finance tuition for 50 students. Jacobson's salary, 300! --Raphael Justewicz   Student,   Graduate School of Design
