An underground electrical explosion rocked the Harvard Law School (HLS) late yesterday afternoon, resulting in the evacuation of several Law School dormitories last night.
Power outages were expected in most HLS dormitories and two lecture halls until today. At least one dormitory, Hastings Hall, was closed because of hazardous smoke fumes resulting from the incident.
An electrical fire is suspected to have, triggered the blast, which occurred around 5 p.m. yesterday, according to Harvard Police Chief Francis D. "Bud" Riley.
One student, who requested anonymity, said he heard "two large booms about three minutes apart and then the electricity went out."
HLS officials contacted the Red Cross to obtain approximately 100 cots for displaced students, according to Michael J. Chmura, news officer.
Administrators were considering renting rooms in area hotels and suggested that students spend the night with friends living off-campus, he said.
Despite the power loss, students were permitted to stay in several dorms not directly affected by the fire. Flashlights were provided, but candles were not allowed in the buildings, he said.
"Everyone will have a place to sleep," Chmura said.
