I was forced to do much self-reflection after reading Elizabeth T. Bangs' "Perspectives" editorial ("Put A Little Class Back in Our Lives") in the April 1 Crimson. I must confess, I am one of those that would embarrass her, for if I were to go to a Hasty Pudding production I would probably do so in an "unrefined" pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
I have been to "Phantom of The Opera," but not "more than once" like the oh, so distinguished Elizabeth T. Bangs! I apologize for being a heathen. I blame it on my parents who never took me to the opera as a youngster, probably for the (justifiable) fear that I would jump off the balcony in pure and utter boredom.
Oh, how I wish that I had done so, then maybe I could be a snob too, and look down on my peers for their "lack of refinement."
We Harvard students should all be ashamed of ourselves. Let's bring back the days of Jane Austen. --Daniel P. Herlihy '97
