Openness Is the Key

TO THE EDITORS

I was astonished but not shocked when I saw a card on several bulletin boards at Harvard announcing a group discussion on "Where is the clitoris?" Several years ago, that would have been completely taboo, but in the open society of today it should be discussed, at least for the following reason:

From the beginning to the end of human existence on this earth, everyone has had three prime events in one's life--birth, marriage or the equivalent and death. Since one can do nothing about the first and last, obviously copulation with the opposite sex to prolong the race is necessary. In that act the female orgasm is important, much more than for the male, and the key to that is in the clitoris, QED. --Richard N. Frye   Emeritus Professor of Iranian
