The Harvard men's tennis team fell to No. 2 UCLA yesterday in the first round of the USTA/ITA Men's National Team indoor Tennis Championships.
The 5-2 loss gave the No. 33 Crimson its first defeat in five matches this season. Harvard's only victors on the day were junior fourth-seed Mitty Arnold (7-6(5), 7-6(1)) and freshman sixth-seed Eliot Weiss (7-6(2), 6-4).
But those wins were tempered by a Bruin sweep in the doubles and straight-set victories against the Crimson's top three seeds (co-cpatain Todd Meringoff, sophomore Phillip Tseng and sophomore Tom Blake, respectively).
Rounding out the competition was a loss by freshman fifth-seed Kunj Majmudar in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-3). UCLA (9-0) will next battle against the winner of South Alabama and Pepperdine, while Harvard goes to the consolation bracket to face the loser of that match.
