I am writing this letter in response to today's article in the Crimson titled "Rawlins' Success Relies on Council's Record." I disagree strongly with the comment made by council member Ben Hulse '99 that "most of the new members who are very involved are part of [Hyman's and Rawlins'] executive cabinet." In fact, most new members on the Council who are very involved are definitely not part of this executive cabinet, which consists of fewer than 10 new council members.
New members are involved in the Undergraduate Council in a variety of ways, such as through participation in the First-Year Caucus, in committees and at full council meetings. New council members who are not directors have been extremely involved in sponsoring legislation and amendments, making influential remarks in debate and serving as student-faculty representatives to various committees.
While the executive cabinet has a valuable function, to imply that Rob and Lamelle are responsible for inspiring for the majority of new "very involved" council members is simply not true. In fact, most "very involved" council members, like most council members overall, do not support the Rawlins-O' Mary ticket. --Sam Spital '00, Southwest Yard council representative
