A man was stabbed repeatedly in the throat and heart last night in front of Dynasty Gallery, a Mass. Ave. furniture store.

The victim was rushed to Mass. General Hospital where he was treated for two-inch lacerations to the throat and the heart.

According to Cambridge Police, investigators are looking for a middle-aged, stocky white male they believe is responsible for the stabbing.

State police searched last night for witnesses who might have seen the suspect, according to Quentin C. Sullivan, a bartender at the nearby Cellar bar located on Mass. Ave. between Harvard and Central squares.

"[A state police officer] asked me if I had seen a 50-plus male with white hair who looked homeless," Sullivan said.

Community residents interviewed in the bar late last night said the person they thought was the victim was a six-foot homeless man in his late twenties.

"I was on my way into Harvard Square about 6 p.m. when I saw the [victim]," said Sinead Hourihine, who lives nearby.

"As I passed him, he asked me for change," she said.

Residents said they frequently saw the victim, described as a "polite, soft-spoken man," in front of the furniture store.

"He was there all the time, that was his space," said Deborah Peterson, who has lived in the neighborhood for several years.

"You see him in the morning, pass him at lunch, on the way home," Peterson added.
