Epps' Office Issues Security Advisory in Wake of Crimes

The Office of the Dean of Students issued a security advisory yesterday to all members of the Harvard community in response to the series of crimes recently committed in the Harvard area.

"[The] intent...was to make students aware of the armed robberies that occurred," said Peggy McNamara, spokesperson for the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD).

HUPD Chief Francis D. "Bud" Riley and Dean of Students Archie C. Epps III worked together on drafting the advisory yesterday, McNamara said. The advisory comes after a recent string of armed robberies and assaults on campus.

Last Wednesday a man with a knife robbed a first-year student through his Wigglesworth D entry window at approximately 4:30 a.m.

And last Saturday afternoon, a man wielding a knife struck a graduate student on the side of the head and fled with his cash and credit cards on Quincy Street near the Lamont Library gate.

The security advisory flier warns students to keep "two locked doors between you and the street."

The flier also encourages students to "be aware of your surroundings" and "walk down well-lit areas, paths, [and] streets." --Courtney A. Coursey

Fire Forces Evacuation of Ta Sheng, California Pizza Kitchen

A fire in the chimney of California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) forced the evacuation of two restaurants at about 10 p.m. last night.

No one was hurt by the smoke that filled CPK and Ta Sheng, a Chinese restaurant directly above it, and no damage was evident, according to CPK Manager Bill J. Long.

Firefighters on the scene said they speculated the fire was caused by buildup of ashes in CPK's chimney.

Because CPK burns wood in its ovens, fires like last night's occasionally occur, said Cambridge Police Officer Ron T. Folger.

CPK has occupied its Eliot Street location for three years and had this problem once before, Long said.   --Andrew A. Green
