Dean of Students Archie C. Epps III underwent a kidney transplant yesterday. His wife, Valerie Epps, was the donor.
Epps was hospitalized earlier this year for related health problems.
"We wish a speedy recovery to Dean Epps and look forward to welcoming him back to Harvard," Deborah Ruder, a spokesperson for the University, said yesterday.
In the interim, Assistant Dean of Students Sarah E. Flatley will be handling most of his duties, Epps' office said yesterday.
"I hope and expect he will recover fully and quickly," Dean of the College Harry R. Lewis '68 said in an e-mail message yesterday.
Lewis also said that he and Associate Dean of the College Thomas A. Dingman '67 will be assisting Flatley until Epps returns.
No details on the conditions of Epps or his wife were available yesterday
