5. The Excitement

March 7, 1995

The Game for the Ivy League women's basketball championship marked the end of a career and (possibly) the beginning of an era.

Although the game itself was over almost as soon as it began (Dartmouth jumped out to an early 12-2 lead and flirted with a 30-point margin), getting to the game was good enough. The Crimson had come so far, in the process creating a female hoops frenzy on a campus known for sports dispassion.

In 1993-1994, Harvard struggled to a 7-19 record. In 1994-1995, senior captain Tammy Butler---Harvard's greatest women's basketball player ever--led a 180-degree turnaround. The Crimson (19-7) was the Ivy League runner-up.

"We'll get the title next year, but I wanted it this year for Tammy Butler," coach Kathy Delaney Smith said.

Even though it lost, now it has the experience of playing in the big game.
