The Harvard lightweight crew notched its second consecutive San Diego Crew Classic crown yesterday on Mission Bay, while Washington prevented a successful Harvard heavyweight defense.
The lightweights (6:15.90) locked up its sixth Secretary of the Navy Cup with a three boat length trouncing of the University of Toronto (6:25.02).
Although the defending champion heavyweights (6:06.51) mounted a challenge with 500 meters remaining, Washington (6:08.50) kept an early lead and took home its 10th Copley Cup.
In the heavyweight final, Temple (6:08.50) notched the three-spot, with Penn (6:09.81), Yale (6:13.15) and Cal (6:15.59) lagging behind.
In the lightweight race, Pacific Lutheran (6:39) placed third, while the University of California (6:39.80) and the University of Texas (6:48.24) brought up the rear. Princeton and Yale, whose crews did not make the long trip to the other coast, were notable absentees.
The Radcliffe heavyweights (7:07.98) took fourth--more than 14 seconds behind winner Washington (6:52.29)--in the Whittier Cup. The 'Cliffie lightweights (7:52.01) placed second to Villanova (7:48.20).
