BC Edges W. Tennis

Injury-Laden Team Succumbs to Eagles

Harvard women's tennis had to move its match with BC out of Palmer-Dixon Tennis Center to Gordon Track and Tennis Center at 6:30 p.m. yesterday.

Why?

Palmer-Dixon was otherwise occupied after 6:30; Harvard rents out the courts. BC  5 Harvard  4

The displacement sums up the day that the women's tennis team had rather well. Hobbled by injuries, illness and eligibilty problems, the Crimson were upset 5-4 by the Eagles.

"We really had three healthy varsity players playing today," said sophomore Gina Majmudar, who played first singles and first doubles. "We did well for what we had but we wanted to start off the season well."

While Majmudar won her singles match 6-4, 6-3 and second singles player Myling Torres won her match 6-4, 6-4, the loss of players like co-captains Kate Roiter and Kelly Granat really hurt in the middle part of the line-up and the doubles matches.

With Granat and Roiter unavailable and first doubles player Rona Mayer having eligibilty problems, all three doubles teams lost. Throw in a couple of losses by the fifth and sixth singles players and you got all the ingredients of an upset.

Harvard faces Virginia Common-wealth, a team it beat 5-0 earlier in the fall--this Saturday at Palmer Dixon. According to Majmudar, the Crimson should have little trouble.

"We should be fine," Majmudar said. "When we're healty, we are one of the strongest teams Harvard has had in a decade."
