More Than 1,000 Attend Fogg Centennial Ball

Saturday night the gaping stone court at the center of the Fogg Museum of Art filled with guests in tuxedos, ball gowns, military uniforms and even a few kilts as more than 1,000 people gathered in honor of the museum's 100th anniversary.

Harvard students, faculty, administrators and museum benefactors convened for the white-tie ball, which was organized by the Friends of the Harvard Art Museums as part of a weekend of activities celebrating the Fogg's centennial.

While tickets for the event cost $150 each, student Friends and their guests could attend for only $25.

Several hundred undergraduates attended the ball.

"It was a very interesting evening," said Catherine S. Robe '96.

"It was a nice mix of students and other people from the Harvard community," she said.

"[The ball] was more luxurious than any other event I've been to," said Tara B. Reddy '96, a member of the Student Friends Committee and an employee of the Harvard Art Museums.

The party featured a swing band called "White Heat" and a group of students who organized Tableaux Vivants--people recreating scenes from famous works of art--throughout the museum, which was open free to the public during the day Saturday as part of the celebration.

Christina M. Carroll '97 and Reddy, who both helped organize the event, said they were pleased with the turnout. "It was very, very crowded," Carroll said. "I think [the ball] went very well."

"[The ball] was wonderful," said Robe, who joined Student Friends of the Harvard Art Museums just this year. "It was one of the noest events I've been to since I've been here."
