Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France Stanley H. Hoffmann and former chair of the Center for European Studies (CES) will be on sick leave for the next three weeks and will be unable to lecture or teach section during that time.

Students were informed in class Wednesday that Hoffmann has injured his knee and has been instructed by physicians to stay off his feet for about a month, according to Jeffrey W. Vanke, a teaching fellow in the course. Historical Study B-70: Europe 1945-1990.

Hoffmann also co-teaches two graduate level government courses.

Hoffmann teaches Historical Study B-70 along with current CES Director Charles S. Maier, who is also Krupp Foundation Professor of European Studies.

Maier, who taught the class alone last year, will assume full teaching duties until Hoffmann returns in early December.

Smatis Xydas '96, a student in Hoffmann's section, said he was disappointed that the professor would be unable to hold sections but added that "since Professor Maier and the TF are teaching that alleviates the problem."

Xydas said part of the reason he took the core course was because of Hoffmann's international reputation as "the authority on European studies."

Andrea G. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli '96, who is also in Hoffmann's section, said that Hoffman had recently been teaching on crutches.

While Sangiovanni Vincentelli said Hoffmann "was a definite plus" to the course, he added that Maier "is a very good lecturer as well."
