Dwight Perkins will step down after fifteen years as director of the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID).
HIID is the University's institute for technical assistance to and research on developing nations. Under Perkins, it has expanded its dealings with Russia and Eastern Europe and its environmental initiatives.
The Kennedy School professor said he is leaving because "people should do these jobs for 10 or 12 years."
He will spend his newfound leisure teaching and researching a new book on one of his academic specialties, contemporary Asian economic development.
Perkins said he does not know when a successor will take over leadership of the institute.
