Is Gay Ban Really Wrong?

DISSENT

The staff may be right in its opposition to the ban on gays in the military. They may be wrong.

To clarify my intentions, let me preface my comments by saying that I speak from the perspective of a former opponent of the ban on gays, one who was quite dogmatic at the time. Now I am not so sure.

One thing I am sure of, though, is that the staff is no more qualified than I in condemning the ban on gays as unnecessary. Who among them has actually served in the armed forces? Who among them has any actual experience with the dynamics of a team at war?

I am not arguing that the ban on gays is not unfortunate, or that it is justified. But I would sooner trust the judgment of a Colin Powell than that of a group of armchair commentators.
