Sandy Nyarko, Luis Corona, Ambrosio Calzada and 130 of their fellow employees are on strike at the Harvard Club in New York. They were forced to strike because management has demanded more than 30 contract concessions from them. Here are just some of the demands Harvard Club President Don Shapiro and his attorney, Harlan Silverstein, are making at the collective bargaining table.
.The $300/hr. lawyer says Sandy Nyarko should no longer be paid 25 cents per hour extra for carrying heavy loads of linen.
.The lawyer and Harvard Club President Don Shapiro say that a $10 bonus should no longer be paid to employees "who perform so-called 'dirty jobs' such as cleaning vomit, blood excrement, etc."
.The lawyer is demanding that Luis Corona and Ambrosio Calzada must no longer receive one hour of overtime pay each week to make coffee all day. That's about 12 cents per hour the $300/hr. lawyer wants to take away from these hard workers.
It's true. Harvard Club President Don Shapiro is demanding these things from loyal workers, some of whom have well over thirty years on the job. Can you imagine his lawyer sitting in collective bargaining negotiations, earning $300 or so per hour, and arguing over the pennies per hour workers receive for making coffee and carrying linen? And Don Shapiro and his lawyer have 33 other demands! Things like no wage increase, co-payment for medical coverage, and more work -- but less pay.
You can help support these workers. Call Don Shapiro at 212-779-2700. That's the phone number of the bank where Mr. Shapiro serves as president and where no one is trying to make him co-pay for his family's health insurance. Tell Mr. Shapiro to treat his workers fairly. And don't worry if he doesn't take your call. Just leave him a message.
