Women Tankers Roll Over Cornell

Deep.

Perhaps that's the most apt word to describe the Harvard women's swimming team. Four sophomores and two freshman combined to win seven events as the Crimson (6-1, 6-1) rolled past Cornell in its season finale, 176-113.

After suffering their its loss last Saturday to Princeton, Harvard regained its form Sunday against the University of Pennsylvania and managed to carry it through to yesterday's meet at Cornell.

"It was our last swim meet of the year and we went out with a bang," Assistant Swimming Coach Stacie Duncan said. "We're getting ready for the Easterns now and people are resting up."

Captain Deborah Kory led the way against the Big Red, stroking her way to first-place finishes in both the 200-meter butterfly and the 500-meter freestyle.

Sophomore Laura Koerckel followed suit, taking first in the 1000-meter freestyle and the 200-meter breaststroke. Freshman Katie Liu also notched two wins in the 100-and 200-meter backstroke.

The Crimson continued its domination of the freestyle events with junior captain Kristan Gately winning the 50-meter and sophomore Greta Steffenson taking the 200.

Freshman Emily Buckley helped the cause with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke and sophomore Sarah Durkin kicked in a first in the 200-meter individual medley.

Harvard's diving squad was just as strong. Senior Marcia Vital clinched a victory in the three-meter spring-board while sophomore Hilary Grubb locked up the one-meter.

The Crimson will next head to the Eastern Championships at Princeton February 24-26.
