Committee Considers Barring Felons From Elected Office

A city council committee last night considered a proposed homerule petition that would prevent convicted felons from serving in elected office.

No action was taken on the proposal, which was presented to the City Council's Rules and Government Operations Committee, but the committee agreed to consider it again in November.

The law would not affect City Councillor and convicted felon William H. Walsh, since he was convicted before it could take effect.

Walsh was found guilty in April on 41 counts of bank fraud and making false statements.

If the proposal is approved, the council will petition the state legislature to amend the current statute, which only removes convicted felons from office once they've been sentenced to prison terms.

The Cambridge Civic Association and other political opponents of Walsh cannot remove him from office under the present law because he has not been sentenced to a prison term. His sentencing in the fraud case is scheduled for Nov.9.
