Kiosk Outside Wigg B Set on Fire

Unknown Suspects Identified by Residents; Police Not Alerted

Unknown suspects set fire to a kiosk outside Wigglesworth B entry at about 1:30 a.m. yesterday morning.

One of the kiosk's three panels was charred, exposing a cardboard interior. Many of the posters showed signs of the flames.

A group of first-year students said they suspect that a man and woman who followed them through the Yard started the blaze.

Alex R. Nettune '98 said the man and woman confronted him and eight of his friends in front of Out of Town News as the group returned from a night out at around 1:30 a.m.

"We were talking kind of loud as we passed this guy and girl," Nettune said. "The guy turned to us and said 'Hey, do you mind, keep it down, we're trying to have a conversation."

Nicole A. Barry '98 said she and her friends thought nothing of the incident until they entered the yard and noticed the duo was following them.

"The group walked faster and faster and then someone jokingly yelled 'Run! Run!," Barry said.

The group fled to safety in several Wigglesworth entryways, Nettune said.

"A couple minutes later, I looked out the window and heard the guy say something funny like 'My name is Cool Hand Luke,'" Nettune said.

About 10 minutes after the group entered Wigglesworth, Barry said, she and her friends looked out and saw the kiosk on fire.

"All the flyers and the top of the kiosk were engulfed in flames," Hager said.

William A. Plerhoples '98 said he extinguished the blaze using skills he learned as an Eagle Scout. "I tore a branch off a tree and beat the flames out," Plerhoples said.

Group members said they did not notify the University Police and returned to their dorms after the fire was extinguished.
