Those nostalgic for the days of "scoping" through the Freshman Register may be in luck, if plans for a campus-wide upperclass facebook become reality.

The Undergraduate Council's Residential Committee last week approved a proposal to consolidate the house facebooks, according to former Council chair Malcolm A. Heinicke '93.

The campus-wide facebook would likely be more cost effective than the current system of individual books for each house. The current books cost about $4,000 per house, while the campus-wide book would cost a total of between $20,000 and $21,000, Heinicke said, adding that his estimates were "conservative."

But Heinicke said the financial savings offered by the new book constitute only one benefit. Other advantages include "breaking down the barrier between Houses" and expediting facebook distribution, he said.

If approved, the consolidated facebooks "should be out by the first or second week of [the 1993-94 school year]," Heinicke said. In the past, some house facebooks have not been distributed to students until November or December, according to Adams House Master Robert J. Kiely.

Heinicke and David S. Carlock '94, who came up with the idea for the new book, met with members of the Masters Executive Committee, which includes the masters of several houses, to discuss the proposal.

Heinicke said he and Carlock are now trying to get the approval of the house masters who were not in attendance at the meeting.

Heinicke said each house will be asked to contribute $1,500-$1,700 toward the cost of the new books.

The money each house saves will go toward a house supplement with information on such aspects of house life as the senior common room and tutor programs, Heinicke said. Savings in excess of the cost of this supplement will go to each house master's discretionary fund.
