Mediation begins. President Neil L. Rudenstine, on vacation in Europe, is accused of "skipping town." When he arrives at Logan airport, he is met by union members bearing flowers. Provost Jerry R. Green accuses the union of spreading "disinformation."

September

A coalition of Harvard unions releases a letter citing examples of Harvard managers behaving in a hostile manner toward unions. Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Mass) writes a letter of support which is read at a rally outside Mass. Hall.

October

Costumed demonstrators chant Halloween protest poems outside Rudenstine's home.

December 1

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson speaks at the union's invitation, drawing a crowd of thousands. Negotiations continue.

December 22

Breakthrough negotiations last from 4 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next day.

January 1993

A January 4 settlement founders amidst confusion over details. The union announces a settlement January 6; Harvard insists there has been no settlement until January 7. Both sides say they are happy with the final agreement.
