Heptagonals Uphill Climb for Thinclads

The Harvard men's and women's track and field teams will be competing in the Heptagonal Games Association Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Yale University's Dewitt Cuyler Field this weekend.

In addition to the Ancient Eight teams, the field will also include Army and men's defending champions Navy.

The Harvard women are hoping to place in the top three for the meet, if not higher.

"We've done really well in the past few weeks and we should have strong chance," senior Captain Cathy Griffin said. "Cornell and Brown will be our main opponents."

Griffin is the defending champion in the discus and is also favored to win in the shot put, which she won in 1990. She will also be competing in the hammer throw.

Griffin is not discounting the possibility of a higher finish for the Harvard women.

"Never say never," she said.

The men, however, are not expecting to finish as high.

"Realistically, we have to look at a six place finish," senior Nick Sweeney said. "It is one of the most competitive meets of the season and we still have to beat three very good teams [to finish sixth]."
