...And More of the Same for Netwomen

Two up and two down.

The Harvard women's tennis squad beat Pennsylvania, 5-4, on Saturday to chalk up its second win in a row against Ivy League opponents at the Beren Tennis Center.

Against a surprisingly strong Penn squad, the Crimson (7-8 overall, 2-0 Ivy) had to go down to the wire to capture the victory.

Senior Kim Cooper, playing in the third singles position, defeated Lisa Adelman in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to close out the meeting.

"I had a really bad day on Friday and I needed a big match," Cooper said.

Cooper, who is returning to action after a three year layoff due to injury, started the second set "a little tentative," but quickly recovered in the final frame.

"I won because I knew that the team needed the point.. That really motivated me," Cooper said.

Freshman Erika deLone had another superb outing, easily defeating freshman Barrie Bernstein 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles.

DeLone and partner junior Erika Elmuts got the first point for Harvard with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Penn's Adelman and Monica Goldberg.

"The whole team's really psyched about the win," deLone said. "Things are looking good for us."

Comfortable Lead

Harvard held a comfortable 4-2 lead after sophomore Eliza Parker's 6-3, 6-1 fourth singles win.

But the Quaker's Goldberg and Kim Khourm snatched the fifth and sixth singles against freshmen Agata Passent and Kendra Harris to even up the score at 4-4.

"It was a little closer than we hoped but it's nice to know that we we're able to pull it out," deLone said. HARVARD, 7-2 at Beren Tennis Center
