Mather Resident Wins Rhodes

Mather resident Adalsteinn I. Brown '93 has been awarded a Canadian Rhodes Scholarship.

Brown, a native of London, Ontario, said he learned of the news on Sunday. Traditionally, 11 Canadian Rhodes Scholarships are awarded yearly, he said.

As a Rhodes Scholar, Brown says he plans to study health policy and work towards a Ph.D. at Oxford University.

Brown, who is a government concentrator, said the two-and-a-half-month scholarship application process included a one-hour interview with a panel of the scholarship committee members.

"We talked a lot about my work--health policy, how we perceive health, trying to manage scarce health resources," said Brown, who is writing his senior thesis on tuberculosis control policy in New York City.

Brown said he is looking forward to the experience of living abroad.

"The climate in Oxford is about the same as the climate in Boston, which is fine," he said. "A lot of people complain about English rain, but I have no problem with that."
