A theft suspect "well-known" to Harvard law enforcement officials was arrested by Northeastern University police on Tuesday, police officials said.

Responding to a 3:30 p.m. call about a "suspicious character" exiting a Northeastern office building, campus police arrested Clark Caravan, 32, when they discovered an outstanding warrant for his arrest from the Harvard Police Department.

Harvard police suspect Caravan stole a wallet from the Center for International Affairs in July, Lt. Lawarence T. Murphy said yesterday.

Although criminal records are confidential in Massachusetts, Murphy said Caravan is "well-known to the university" for past incidents.

Caravan was arraigned in Cambridge District Court yesterday on the misdemeanor charges of larceny under $250 and trespass after notice. He was released on $100 bail, according to a spokesperson for the Middlesex County District Attorney.

Janet L. Hookailo, assistant director of communications at Northeastern University, said it was unclear whether Caravan had committed a crime at Northeastern. "There was a wallet missing from an office, but he did not have it on him when he was arrested," she said.

Caravan will return to court for a pre-trial conference on December 16. If convicted, he faces penalties of not more than $300 or a year in jail.
