The Harvard-Radcliffe Bisexual, Gay, and Lesbian Student Association (BGLSA) is asking the College to consider disciplining a student they say deliberately vandalized several BGLSA posters Monday evening.

In a statement released yesterday, BGLSA said the student ripped down a poster on a kiosk outside Widener Library and kicked several others taped to the ground. BGLSA termed the alleged incident "obviously offensive" to the gay community, and said it "unequivocally condemns the student's actions and expects that the University will appropriate disciplinary measures."

The student, Hollis resident John A. Greene '96, denies ripping down any posters. He admits to kicking a few, but says he says he did not single out BGLSA posters, and did not intend to slight the organization.

"It wasn't any hate crime, if that's what you're making it to be," Greene said. "I was just kicking them up. I see signs on the sidewalk, and I just kick them up."

College officials would not comment on the matter when reached last night, except to say that they were aware of the situation and were discussing it with the involved parties.

According to John A. Frazier '95, a co-chair of the BGLSA, the organization learned about the alleged incident from a BGLSA member who claimed to witness it. Frazier said the BGLSA member, whom he would not identify, also reported the incident to Greene's proctor after following Greene to his dormitory.

Frazier said he has some of the posters Greene allegedly ripped down, and that Greene was clearly trying to vandalize BGLSA posters.

"If he kicked over posters, he kicked over many and he did it selectively," Frazier said.
