Time-Warner Gives Literary Center Gift

Grant Targeted for 'Initiatives in Globalism'

The Center for Literary and Cultural Studies (CLCS) has received a gift of $50,000 from Time-Warner Inc., according to the center's director.

CLCS director and Professor of English Marjorie Garber said that the gift is not targeted for anything specific, but is for the center's general use in pursuing "new initiatives in globalism" and other literary and cultural studies.

'Very Exciting'

Garber added that the gift is "very exciting for us."

One new program that the gift will fund will be a national conference "designed to forward the inter-disciplinary exploration of topics related to communications, technology, globalism and the arts," according to a CLCS press release.

The conference will likely focus on 20th-century visual arts and take place this spring or summer, according to Karen Friedland, CLCS program administrator.

J. Peter Wolff, a spokesperson for Time-Warner, said yesterday that his company placed a "major emphasis" on supporting quality programs that promote inter-cultural studies in the arts.

Gift to Be More Than Financial

Wolff also said that Time-Warner hopes to contribute more than financially. The company is "interested in Harvard education" and hopes to be more involved with CLCS in the future, he said.

$100,000 Grant

The University has funded the center for only the past three years, Friedland said. The center was established under a $100,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation in 1984.

The center was founded to enhance the study of literature and cultural criticism. It offers a variety of seminars, lectures, conferences and films for graduate students and faculty.
