To the Editors of The Crimson:
As impressed as I've been with the effort, creativity and (for the most part) accuracy of the presidential search coverage in The Crimson's pages, I was surprised by a false and particularly malicious report in the self-congratulatory "Reporter's Notebook" (April 5). There, you printed, "Slichter, the search committee chair, did receive at least one phone call from the Harvard Independent. Slichter reportedly admitted that he had never heard of the publication and promptly declined to comment."
Although Slichter declined comment to the Independent many, many times during the search, he never said anything along the lines of what you "reported." I suggest that you check your libel handbook and be more careful of printing supermarket tabloid-style falsehoods in the future. Josh Clark Executive News Director Harvard Independent
