We Need Final Clubs

DISSENT:

To their credit, the majority is at least consistent in opposing all single-sex clubs, even ones formed by female students. But while consistent, the staff is nevertheless wrong to condemn the emergence of the Bee Club.

Like the existing male final clubs and fraternities, the Bee serves worthy social practices, particularily on a campus as socially inactive as Harvard's. What the women in the Bee realize and what the majority fails to understand is that Harvard can be a pretty boring place on the weekends without the kind of reliable entertainment and comraderide that clubs provide. Put simply, most people join them to have fun. Rather than merely condemning the clubs for being "elitist and exclusionary," the staff should address the reasons for their existence.

Finally, even the most vocal critics of clubs must concede the logic of having at least one female alternative on campus. Perhaps, with some luck, the Bee will be as prosperous and enduring as its nine all-male counterparts.
