More than half the Yardlings living in Matthews South flushed away their frustrations yesterday morning, adorning the stairwell with nine rolls of toilet paper and drawing the wrath of one of the entry's proctors.
"It was Picasso on acid--as impressionistic as toilet paper could ever get," said resident Francisco A. Rivera '95.
Residents estimated that 40 to 50 of the entry's 79 residents participated in the impromptu decoration, which began at about 3 a.m. and lasted approximately 45 minutes.
All of the students in the dorm were wakened this morning at 8:15 by the "banging, yelling and screaming" of proctor Richard Wood, who ordered that the toilet paper be taken down immediately, said Tyler R. Leshney '95.
Following the early morning reveille signs were posted on the entry's first and fourth floors. "Playing with toilet paper is NO JOKE," the signs read. "It is expected that this MESS will be cleaned up IMMEDIATELY."
Leshney and three other students got up and wiped away the toilet paper in a matter of minutes this morning at Wood's insistence.
Wood refused to comment about the incident.
Adam J. Szubin '95 likened the creation to a spider's web. "We meant it as an expression of excitement, enthusiasm, and fun-loving frolic," he said.
Many students called the incident "dorm bonding," and said that in such a large entry, the toilet papering was a means of getting to know people outside of their proctor groups.
Students initially threw toilet paper from the first floor up to the second where students were congregating and "avoiding work," according to residents. People on the second floor reacted by catapulting the toilet paper up all five floors and around the skylight, residents said.
Students involved in the papering were scheduled to attend a meeting last night, where they expected Wood to discuss the toilet-papering, said Jo Jo Rhee '95.
"We're not in trouble, he just wants to talk about what happened," Rhee said.
