Going, going...is it gone?
That's what players, coaches and spectators were wondering yesterday in the second game of the Harvard baseball team's doubleheader against Northeastern at a cold and windy Soldiers Field.
As Harvard attempted a comeback in the second inning against the Huskies (8-4), Captain Tom Konjoyan cranked a line drive that appeared to clear the left-centerfield fence. The umpires ruled the blast a ground rule double, however, killing the momentum of the rally.
"I thought it was a homerun," Konjoyan said. "I felt like I hit the ball really well."
The Crimson (2-6 overall, 0-2 GBL) plated two more runs in the inning to cut the Northeastern lead to 6-5, but the Huskies went on to tear up Harvard's pitching, scoring 13 more runs en route to a 19-10 romp. The loss was even more disheartening after the Crimson, behind a solid pitching performance from senior Bob Baxter, dropped the opener, 3-2. It was Baxter's second straight one-run defeat.
"It was a little hard to get loose in the cold weather, but I felt good," Baxter said. "[Northeastern] gave up only three hits. It's tough to win games like that."
Ted Decareau provided all of Harvard's offense in the first game. The junior rightfielder launched a Huskies, 3-2 at Soldiers Field

Neither starting pitcher finished the secondinning, and the Crimson was forced to use fivehurlers. Harvard starter Todd Forman left with no outsin the second on the losing side of a 5-1ballgame, but errors plagued the Crimson onceagain. With the bases loaded, no outs and two runsalready on the board in the inning, Huskies secondbaseman Jim Caeran hit what appeared to be a suredouble play ball to Harvard second baseman JimMwroka. The ball rolled through Mwroka's legs, however, allowing two more runs to score andsending Forman to an early shower. "It seems like every game we have one badinning," Baxter said. "The whole team seems to letup a bit." Harvard couldn't find a pitcher to contain theHuskies' devastating offense, which mounted a17-hit attack highlighted by Pete Charpentier'sfifth inning three-run dinger over the 375-ft.sign in right-center. Harvard managed 10 runs ofits own, however, receiving strong hitting fromsophomores Nick DelVecchio and Dan Scanlan.Freshman catcher Phil Andriolo added two hits to astrong performance behind the plate. "Northeastern is one of the best teams we'llplay all year," Decareau said
