NEWTON--Well, it was the Beanpot but it certainly wasn't as exciting as the men's hockey game Monday night at Boston Garden.
The women's hockey team pummeled host Boston College, 10-2, last night here at Conte Forum in the opening round of the women's Beanpot.
Harvard (10-4 overall, 3-3 Ivy) will face Northeastern in the final next Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. The Huskies defeated Boston University, 2-1, in the first opening round game last night to advance in the Boston classic.
The Crimson was led by sophomore foward Courtney Hurley who collected a hat trick. Co-Captain Char Joslin earned a playmaker (three assists) in the game, and also added one goal.
"Courtney Hurley played an excellent game," sophomore Sandra Whyte said. "The team played well, and our passing was good."
The Crimson did play well as a team. Just look at the vital statistics.
Seven players registered multiple-point games for Harvard, five scored three or more points and only two Harvard skaters failed to get on the scoreboard.
The Crimson dominated from the start, opening up a 5-0 lead in the first period on goals by Kim Landry, Whyte, Ceci Clark, Joslin and Hurley.
Freshman goalie Lexi Shear and the rest of the team were rarely challenged en route to the easy win.
Despite the lack of competition, the Crimson managed to hone its game for this weekend's big matchup against Cornell Sunday. Harvard also plays St. Lawrence Saturday.
"We worked on moving the puck," Whyte said. "We were trying to prepare ourselves for St. Lawrence and Cornell."
The Big Red defeated Harvard, 3-1, in Cambridge last month. Cornell is undefeated in league play this season.
As for Northeastern and the Beanpot final, although still a few games away, the Crimson will have its hands full.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to give them a good game," Whyte said. "They have some very good skaters, we'll stay with them as long as we can."
