Four out of five dentists recommend Colgate for your teeth. However, Harvard would not recommend it as an opening day volleyball opponent.
The Harvard women's volleyball team dropped a three-game match to the Red Raiders, after defeating Boston College in a pair of matches at Chestnut Hill on Saturday.
"I was satisfied considering they were the first two matches of the year," Harvard Coach Wayne Lem said. "We are in need of a lot of work, though."
In the first match, the Crimson (1-1) fell behind 2-1 but rallied to win the last two games and the match, defeating the Eagles 15-2, 5-15, 14-16, 15-9, 15-13.
"It was good to beat B.C.," Lem said. "Our experience helped in that match."
The five-game match, however, took its toll on Harvard. Colgate proceeded to sweep the Crimson 17-15, 15-6, 15-7.
After leading the Red Raiders 13-10 in the first game, Harvard squandered its advantage with inept serving. The Crimson missed three serves, allowing Colgate to capture the game.
"We only made about 60% of our serves," Lem said. "That is too low.
Colgate gave Harvard problems with its quick offense and big players. However, the Crimson created several problems for themselves as well.
"We lost our poise, then unraveled a bit after that first game," Lem said. "Concentration was more of a factor than fatigue."
"We had a few mix-ups with plays," junior Carolyn Burger said. "Also, we were experimenting with different line-ups. Our passing and setting were also off a bit."
Harvard now begins preparation for its home opener against Holy Cross. Last season, the Crimson split two matches with the Crusaders.
While Lem believes that his players possess the requisite skills to succeed, he believes that they must develop as a team and foster greater mental toughness.
"We'll see Colgate again," Lem said. "I think the results will be different next time."
