Mack I. Davis II, assistant dean in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), died unexpectedly Tuesday evening of an aneurysm. He was 45.

An administrator and educational consultant with a wide range of experience, Davis joined Harvard in 1970 and served in a variety of teaching posts before becoming assistant dean in 1974.

He served on the Board of Fresh-person Advisors, as acting director of the BSC and director of the College's Advanced Standing program. As a Graduate School of Education research associate in 1970, he joined the "Pathways to Identity Project: A Longitudinal Study in Black Adolescence."

"He was about the most humane and sane person I have ever met. I loved working with him," said John B. Fox '59, administrative dean of FAS and former dean of the college.

Mack received a bachelors degree in philosophy from Boston University in 1966 and a masters degree from the Graduate School of Education in 1970. He also earned a doctorate in clinical psychology at the University, and was a licensed Massachusetts psychologist.

A long-time Cambridge resident, Davis served on the boards of the Cambridge School Volunteers, Massachusetts Planned Parenthood, the International Women's Health Coalition and the International Baccalaureate.

A funeral service will be held at Memorial Church noon tomorrow.
