Track Teams Take Greater Boston Titles

Horner Captures Four Events; Rainey Claims Three First-Place Finishes

The Harvard men's and women's track teams pulled off a double victory in yesterday's Greater Boston Championships at Northeastern University.

The men finished with 87 points, just ahead of Northeastern's 80 1/2, while the women also out-pointed the second-place Huskies, 202-141.

The men's competition was decided in the last event, when Harvard's Eric Rahe, Hiroshi Andrews, John Rowe and John Mee placed first in the mile realy.

"We were two-and-a-half points down when it came to the mile relay, and those guys won it for us," freshman Derrick Horner said.

Horner won four events on the day, sweeping the 100 meters (10.92 seconds), 200 meters (22.13 seconds), long jump (22-ft., 10 1/2 in.), and anchor leg in the first-place 4x100 meter relay (42.99 seconds).

The undefeated Crimson women were able to win their meet decisively.

"The conditions were pretty good for the long distance runners, but it was chilly for the rest of us," said Co-Captain Elizabeth Ross.

Ross placed first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 63.57 seconds.

Last Thursday, Ross set a new Harvard record in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 63.43 seconds also qualified her for the ECAC Championships, which will be held at George Mason University on May 12-14.

Junior Meredith Rainey swept three events on the day, winning the 200 meters, 400 meters and running a leg in the first-place 4x100 meter relay.

"I think it was really good for us to win going into Heps," Rainey said. "It's always nice to win."

Harvard's Jacquelyn Ball and Beth Pfefferle had a close finish in the 800 meters, with Ball taking first place just a fraction of a second ahead of Pfefferle.

The Crimson women also had the top two finishers in the discus, with Cathy Griffin winning the championship and Mara Beverwyk placing second.

Freshman Christine Roberge took second in the long jump, and Rita Raju was runner-up in the triple.

Sophomore Sara Wilcox took second in the 10,000 meters for Harvard, and Megan Young placed second in the high jump.

The Harvard track teams will travel to Columbia on May 6 for the Heptagonal Championships.
