Four members of the Harvard men's squash team participated in the Men's Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association Championships at Dartmouth this weekend.
Harvard Co-Captain Doug Lifford, junior Jon Bernheimer and freshmen Farokh Pandole and Johnny Kaye represented the Crimson in the tournament.
Kaye lost in the third round to Jeff Stanley, Princeton's number one player, 15-10, 15-10, 15-11. Before falling to Stanley in the third round, Kaye won his first two matches, including a victory over Richard Chin, Cornell's number one player.
Pandole also reached the third round before falling to Penn's Rudy Rodriguez, 3-0. All three games were close; Pandole fell in the first game, 15-13.
"Farokh was in control but unfortunately he hit too many tins," Kaye said. "He played like a master in the first game."
"The freshmen played extremely well," Harvard Assistant Coach John Anz said. "It was a really good experience for them."
Lifford started off with a tough 3-2 win against Navy's number-four player. He was then upset by Sam Crew, Franklin and Marshall's number-two player.
"Sam played the best squash of his life," Kaye said.
Bernheimer breezed through his first two matches before he was upset by Yale's Cyrus Metha, the Elis' number-two player, 3-0.
"It's been a really great year," Kaye said.
The Harvard women's squash team ended its season at the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association individual tournament last weekend at Penn. And the tourney was indicative of the entire season--a strong, consistent performance from a strong, consistent team.
"I was very pleased with the way things worked out," Harvard Coach Steve Piltch said. "Taking everything into account, I was real proud of the players."
The Crimson was led by Tri-Captain Sheila Morrissey, who breezed into the quarterfinals with three consecutive wins. The luck of the draw then placed the Harvard senior against number-one seed and eventual champion, Demer Holleran of Princeton. Morrissey's loss in three straight games to Holleran sent her to the "feed-in" consolation rounds.
Morrissey was joined in the consolation bracket by Tri-Captain Jenny Holleran and Stephanie Clark, who both reached the round of 16 before losing.
Morrissey claimed sixth place in the tournament with a 3-1 win over Jenny Holleran in their backdraw match. Holleran finished the tourney in seventh place.
