If quality is better than quantity, the Harvard track team did well to qualify only two runners to compete in the NCAA indoor championships last weekend.
Distance runner Suzanne Jones earned All-America honors by placing fifth in the 5000-meter run. Her time of 16:09.74 is the second fastest time ever run by a Harvard woman.
Jones' time missed beating--by nine seconds--the school record (16:00.00) set by Kate Wiley '85.
It's Rainey Outside
The only other Harvard qualifier in the nationals was junior Meredith Rainey. Rainey, who is competitive in every event from the 55-meter dash to the 800-meter run, qualified for the NCAA championships in the 400-meter dash. Although she finished third in her trial heat, her time of 54.64 was not fast enough to qualify for the finals.
Last weekend's NCAA championships marks the end of the indoor season. Harvard's track team will now prepare for the outdoor season, which begins over spring break as the Crimson travels to Rice University in Houston, Texas.
