Harvard's Bach Society, under the direction of Alan Gilbert '89, performs three pieces this weekend, with a special violin concerto by renowned musician Midori. The Bach Society will perform Stravinsky's Octet for Winds, Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto with John Montgomery as soloist, and Paganini's Violin Concerto in D, with Midori as soloist. Tickets are $10 and $5.

The Marriage of Figaro

The Lowell House Music Society presents Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro tomorrow night and Sunday night in the Lowell House Dining Hall. Benjamin Loeb '89 conducts this unusual performance in which the orchestra is sequestered behind the stage, and the actors are directed via closed circuit television. Tickets are limited. The Carpenter Center continues its celebration of Romanian film with another series of works from great Romanian directors, including Nicolae Marginescu, Stefan Nocolaescu, Alexandru Tatos and Servan Marinescu.

The Return From Hell shows tonight at 7:00 p.m. and features a marital triangle disrupted by World War I. Two rivals must switch from hatred to cooperation if they are to survive.

Ciuleandra, directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu, is based on a popular Romanian novel and depicts a crime of passion. It shows tonight at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday at 4:00 p.m. In it, a woman in the mid-1920s is killed by her husband and drama ensues. The film is shot in neo-expressionistic shadows and icy blues and the action unfolds in flashbacks, climaxing horrifically in the present.

Gathering Clouds, by Alexandru Tatos, uses flashbacks to reveal a plot involving a World War I lieutenant, whose combat experience and disfigurement cause his descent into depravity and madness. Tatos is on the vanguard of Romanian cinema and his photography and plot manipulation reveal the forefront of Romanian New Wave film.
